Regulation BasketballThere are normally 5 players on each team. This means there are 10 total players on the court. In class we will vary how many people will be on the court at one time depending on the amount of people and room we have. The goal is to make the basketball into your basket, while trying to keep the opposing team from scoring in their basket.
The main things I want you to focus on: -You have to dribble when you move with the ball. Moving with the ball without dribbling is illegal. If you pick up your dribble, you can't start dribbling again. -Do not push, reach, or hit an opposing player. Otherwise it is a foul. -You should focus on passing to your teammates in order to get a better shot. Violations and Key Terms Double Dribbling= This is when a player begins to dribble, stops dribbling, and then begins to dribble again. Traveling= This is called when a player moves with the ball without dribbling. Foul= Illegal touching of an opposing player. Layup= A shot near the basket. It is usually shot on the move off of a dribble and using the backboard. Free Throw= This is a free shot awarded if a player is fouled while shooting. It is shot from the free throw line, which is located straight back from the hoop 15 feet. Man to Man Defense= This defense is played when each player is guarding a specific player on the other team. Zone Defense= This defense is played when each player plays defense in a designated area. The player is not guarding a specific player, they are guarding their area. When dribbling use your fingerpads to bounce the ball. The ball shoud be waist level when dribbling. You want to keep your head up when dribbling so you can see the defenders and your teammates. We also learned one extra pass. The "step around pass". We stepped with our right foot around the defender and passed with our right hand. Dribbling KnockoutThis is an elimination basketball dribbling game. Each player is given a ball. The students start by spreading out on the court. Once I give the signal the students begin to dribble. The goal of the game is to knock other players basketball's out of their control and outside of the designated playing area. It is important to focus on keeping control of you basketball during the game, too. I will decrease the size of the playing area as more players are eliminated from the game. The final two players will be inside of the small circle located in the middle of the gym.
Once a player is out, you have to go sit on the bleachers and hold your ball until the next game begins. No Dribble BasketballThis game is exactly what it sounds like. We play this game to help build teamwork, and knowledge of how to move without the ball. The players are not allowed to dribble the ball (if they do, the ball goes to the opposing team). It is important for the teammates to move without the ball in order to get a good shot. We will usually play this game as a half court game with a total of 6 players on the court at once (3 on 3).

KnockoutThis is an elimination shooting game of basketball. A single file line is made at the free throw line. The game only uses two basketballs no matter how many people are playing. The first two players in line each have a ball. The first person in line shoots, followed by the second person in line. If the first shooter makes their shot before the second, they give it to the next person in line (which would be the third). However, if the second shooter makes it before the first then the first shooter is out and must go to the other end of the court and practice shooting until the next game. This process is continued until there is only one shooter left. That person is declared the winner.
Basically, if the person behind you makes their shot before you then you are out. It is a race to make your shot before the person behind you. It is important that the shooters do not touch the other shooters basketballs. Basketball GolfThis game is obviously a combination of basketball and golf. I will have 9 designated "holes" marked by orange dots. The dots will have a peice of paper that will say what hole it is and what par is for the hole. The goal of the game is to take as few shots as possible on the nine holes. In order to proceed past a hole, you have to make a shot from the orange dot. It is important that you make a shot on the hole before you go past it. You are allowed to go to the next hole if you do not make the shot within 10 attempts.
Key Terms Bogey- One shot over par. For example, if a hole is a par 3. This means that you are expected to make the shot within 3 shot attempts. If you make it on your 4th shot, that is a bogey. Par- This is making the shot in the expected amount of shots. Using the example above, it would be made after 3 shots. Birdie- One shot under par. Using the example, this would be scored if you made it in 2 shots. Eagle- 2 shots under par. Using the example, this would be scored if you made it in 1 shot. |
